bourbon + bacon

Meatblog Groupie EvilAgent sent us this tip: UrbanDaddy reports on a new cocktail at Farmers and Fishers. Why are we posting about a cocktail on the meatblog? Read on and find out…

Presenting The Bone Cocktail at Farmers & Fishers, now available off the menu on the Georgetown waterfront for your quaffing pleasure.

In short, it’s everything you need to get you through the week, all in one convenient place (namely, your glass). Your night of pork-aided inebriation begins, innocently enough, with a shot of bourbon, shaken with a few dashes of Tabasco and squeezes of fresh lime juice (the genesis of many great adventures).

Then things really come into focus (and soon after, go blurrily out of it) when your garnish arrives. Think of it as a chocolate-bacon lollipop: a slice of Wisconsin’s Nueske’s bacon (the Vince Lombardi of bacon) that has been skewered, candied with brown sugar and cinnamon, and then dipped in chocolate ganache.

You can read more at UrbanDaddy. You could also go try it out and send us a report if you’re so inclined.

Bacon cupcakes at Buzz Bakery

Bacon cupcakes at Buzz Bakery, originally uploaded by meanlouise.

As we mentioned a few days ago, our favorite bakery is featuring Bacon cupcakes this month.

We went over there Sunday afternoon for coffee and cupcakes. We can now authoritatively report that the bacon cupcake was indeed salty, sweet and mighty tasty. Better hurry, August is almost over.

Bacon Cupcakes at Buzz Bakery

Buzz Bakery is already our favorite local bar/coffeeshop/bakery, so you can imagine our excitement when we picked up today’s Washington Post and saw that Buzz is featuring bacon cupcakes this month!

“You Have to Try This Bacon Cupcakes at Buzz”

Open a box of these Buzz Bakery treats and you’re greeted with the overwhelming aroma of crispy-fried bacon. The experience is as discordant as it sounds — until you try one.

The cupcakes themselves, as it turns out, are actually quite tasty. Peanut butter frosting flecked with itty bits of bacon tops a simple moist chocolate cake. It’s a marriage of salty and sweet that had all four of our testers wishing only for more bacon in the icing. Seriously.

Buzz pastry chef Josh Short is the mad scientist behind the dessert, which is offered at the Alexandria bakery through at least the end of August. For him, the earthy flavors in the dark chocolate, peanut butter and applewood-smoked bacon tie the cupcake together. For us, the peanut butter played a crucial role, bridging the chasm between breakfast meat and chocolate cake. The cupcake is a food dare — an I-bet-you-won’t-eat-this challenge. If you’re a bacon fan, you should.

We haven’t tried them yet, but you know we’re going to.

Bacon news you can use!

“Bacon sandwich really does cure a hangover.”

“Bread is high in carbohydrates and bacon is full of protein, which breaks down into amino acids. Your body needs these amino acids, so eating them will make you feel good.”

Ms Roberts told The Mirror: “Bingeing on alcohol depletes neurotransmitters too, but bacon contains a high level of aminos which tops these up, giving you a clearer head.”

There you have it.

You need to go read the whole post and look at the many, many step-by-step pictures to appreciate what true insanity this is. (And I we mean that in the best possible way, of course).

I found this while poking around at etsy. By the time I got the image posted here at the meatblog I’d forgotten what I was going to say about it (besides, “Awesome!”). Nicodemusgreen has a whole shop of goodies for you to check out at etsy.

Do you know about Scalzi’s Law?

The Linkmeister dropped me a line to let me know where he first ran across mention of BaconCamp, which we posted about yesterday.

This led me to realize that we’ve never posted about Scalzi’s Law, which I’m pretty sure the Linkmeister has told me about before. I had BaconCat bookmarked, at any rate, so I’m going to assume that he sent it to me and give him all the credit. I wouldn’t want to deprive Linky of the fame and fortune that comes with being a frequent meatblog contributer.

But I digress. Scalzi’s Law is explained thusly on sci-fi writer John Scalzi’s Canonical Bacon Page:

Any conversation on the internet will eventually include bacon in some way. And then be forwarded immediately to John Scalzi.

This all apparently came about just because he taped bacon to his cat one day. The rest, as they say, is bacon history. I don’t know if they really say that, but they should.
